I have used Quicken products since the first version available in DOS. Each version/upgrade has “hook” items to attract an addict like me. Unfortunately, like most big software companies, Intuit insists upon releasing “not ready for prime time” software.

With R6, or revision SIX to the beta beta version of 2009 Quicken for Home and Business, data corruption resulted from this revision necessitating the need to unistall the program and the data and re-install the same. In the past, I have used Quicken for Mac believing the box which suggested the Windows data was convertible to a Mac format: WRONG. After the attempted conversion, I discovered my investment records dating back to the late 1940’s would not convert. But, for a mere $250, I could send my personal data to Intuit and they would convert the data and return it to me in a couple of weeks.

In short, the program has gotten more sophisticated but continues to be not tested properly before release. Whether the proram cost $89 or $890, I believe it should perform accurately each and every time. Afterall, the IRS doesn’t want to hear excuses.

I’ve been a user of Quicken since the 1990’s. (Also Quickbooks Pro.) I recently upgraded from an older version of Quicken (I think it was 2004) to Quicken Home and Business 2004.

Overall it works, basically gets the job done. And that’s a rather lukewarm comment from me – in the past I’ve been an enthusiastic fan of Quicken and Intuit.

But some aggravating things about this new upgrade:

    - You used to be able to click in the upper left whenever you wanted to go back to the default entry display. No more. I have no idea how to get back “home” now.

    - The ACCOUNT LIST on the left – now narrower than it was, with no way I can find to widen it. Result: my account names are abbreviated, can’t read some that differ in name in the last several characters. (”Bus credit card” – I now have four of those, can’t tell which is which.)

    - In the ACCOUNT LIST, you formerly could navigate to an account by clicking anywhere on it. Now you have to click on the NAME ITSELF, not the balance nor anywhere between the balance or account. So before, I had a list of accounts down the left and could find, say, “SunTrust 3 ……. 10,000.00″, and click anywhere on that line for detail. But now you MUST click on the part that says “SunTrust 3″. Anywhere else won’t do anything.

    - When entering a check, the “Memo” field (in checking and other account registers) is squeezed down to about 12 displayable characters. Each check I write only allows me to see maybe 12 characters. You can type more, but it instantly scrolls out of view and you can’t read it. I use “memo” a lot, but now can barely read it;

    - I’m a regularly user of “Bill and Income Reminders”. I’d customized my display to show “Bill and Income Reminders” first, listed in order of which were closest. The upgrade missed that, I had to reconfigure.

    - “Bill and Income Reminders” still has the “Action” list on the right, which is where the “ENTER | EDIT | SKIP” buttons are for each line. For example, if I pay a bill and the “reminders” doesn’t pick up on that fact, I quickly “skip” that bill to the next time it’s due. HERE’S THE PROBLEM: Inexplicably, Intuit has SUPPRESSED the display of all the “ENTER | EDIT | SKIP” buttons, forcing you to first click on the line for the particular reminder, which then causes the “ENTER | EDIT | SKIP” buttons to display, and THEN you can click one of those buttons. Why? Just to be different? Well thanks for aggravating me, guys – now it’s an extra click to do what used to be a lot faster.

I could go on, but I don’t have time, because I now have to go update Quicken and it takes me an extra 20 minutes longer each day than it used to.

They screwed up a good thing, if you ask me.

  3. I have been using it for two weeks. Quicken is easier to use than Microsoft Money. The software does have the ability to automatically download information from most all of your accounts (large institutions). It is fairly quick to learn, but you either have to rely on the account access or manually enter – it is so far difficult to reconcile if you try to do both. Also, don’t mark transfers as transfers – it gets double booked and throws everything off. On the bright side, it does not constantly try to upsell you, like Turbo Tax (also made by Intuit) but this is basically their top line product. The amazon download is great, and includes licenses for 3 computers “under one roof”.

  4. Amazing how the ‘downloadable’ verision costs more than the box, huh? I rated this product in the standard media and gave it five stars. I took one away here for 1.) the price should be less 2.) you also have to download a download management program from Amazon –I did this for Turbo Tax and it worked well, however, it, the proprietay nature of that beast is a little disturbing to me, especially the size of that program.

Also, if you are in a hurry for this -i.e.,you want to download it- you probably want to read the bottom of my review about quicken.com.

I have a SMALL business and have been using Quicken for years. Along the way I have noticed how a few years back that Quicken (Intuit) let their product slide and also introduced hype each year to entice you to buy something that wasn’t much more valuable than the previous version. (During those years I tried MS Money, etc., but Quicken still had the edge IMHO in spite of the decline in quality)

When the business grew a little last year I also bought Quickbooks 2008 (I also fell into a hype trap about Payroll addition which was nothing but a service. . .but that is another story) Last year I used it a lot but found that Quickbooks was too cumbersome for a business of my size. So, that caused me to look around for a good product again.

Yes, I was VERY hesitant to buy this product; was planning on returning it if it didn’t live up to its claims. . . but surprisingly, IT DOES. I have been using it about four months now.

The primary feature is the ability to separate your business and personal trasactions on one screen. Being a techie I understand that there was a signficant amount of database work to accomplish this -and they did it- and in such a way it is very convenient to use, even for business transactions that may be in accounts that are normally ‘personal.’ This product is a breeze to use for a business my size and to also keep up with personal finances. Probably if I had as many as five-ten employees I would use Quickbooks.

2009 also offers several other bells and whistles above Quicken 2008: The ease of adding new accounts, the reports, the way it imports data is better and some features I seldom use, i.e., ‘Quicken Picks’ which produces coupons from stores you use. Even these make it worth the price.

But again, it is the Business and Personal data that are easy to seperate, but managable together on single screens that does it for me –it is a signficant advancement along with these additional bells and whistles.

You may want to shop around. I looked at it here but then bought it from Intuit who was bundling it with WillMaker, etc., and etc. And their websites are also improving, e.g., when my computer crashed all I had to do was log back in to quicken.com and reload ALL that software. Intuit is definitely trying to do better, this product was well worth it for me.
